  • Cooler Temperatures
  • Better Air Quality
  • Shade from the Sun
  • Shelter for Animals
  • Climate Control
  • Noise Reduction
  • Soil Erosion Control
  • Increased Property Values

Caring for Shade Trees

Many people don’t think of trees as something that they need to care for, and in most cases, they aren’t too far from wrong. Besides the occasional pruning and fertilizing when the tree appears to have slowed in growth, there are few things to worry about.

  • Plant it Right. As roots will spread outward, be sure to dig a wide and shallow hole to plant new trees. Follow the recommendations from the nursery you purchased the tree from for more specific guidance for the type of tree you purchased.
  • Give it Room to Grow. Equally as important as planting it correctly to allow your new tree to thrive, you have to decide where to plant it. Planting a tree that will grow to be large as it matures right near your home and foundation does not give it adequate room to grow. Be sure you think about the size your new tree will become, rather than simply how big it is when planting it.
  • Water Deeply. During droughts, be sure to water your trees thoroughly. It is important to water deeply during especially dry weather so the water actually reaches the roots which are often 6-12 inches below the soil.
